It has been a while since the last article. As I am reaching my 2-year tenure with Amazon, I would like to share a little bit more about what BIE (Business Intelligence Engineer) does, specifically in Amazon, since it’s a pretty “mixed” role.

Overall, BIE involves a certain level of data engineering, automation and reporting, and data analysis.

Eventually, BIE is there to help stakeholders by leveraging data with end-to-end solutions/products, it could be a dashboard to report/monitor daily operation performance, an analysis to justify decision-making, or other kinds of solutions. To better explain this, I would love to introduce other roles under the analytics job family in Amazon and see how BIE works with them to create value.

Team Structure & Job Family

BIE is under the so-called “analytics job family”, where other common positions include Business Analyst (BA), Data Engineer (DE), Data Scientist (DS), Applied Scientist, Research Scientist, and Machine Learning Engineer (well actually ML engineer is more toward Software Engineering and there is a vertical specifically for ML Engineering).

For all those mentioned above, only Business Analyst is classified as non-tech role. So be aware if you are applying for both BA and BIE, there might be a salary gap between BA and BIE due to tech and non-tech.
